Darrell B. Harrison recently tweeted (or is it “posted” now?) a challenge to read Colossians 3:1-17 daily. I didn’t see the original post, but rather a follow-up post he made, but since then I have been doing this. It’s a challenge I recommend you take up as I’ve already seen its benefit in my life.
How are we to live? What should be our goal in life? What determines the actions that we take, the words we say, the assumptions we hold, and the attitudes we take on? In Colossians 3:17 the Word says, “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.” Christ is Lord. Christ is King. And our lives ought to be fully surrendered to Him.
We live in a day and age where far too many people think that the ultimate goal of life is financial success. Having enough money to have the freedom to do most anything you would like to do, and to own most anything you would like to own, within reason. Too often our entire lives are set up to meet this goal: the greatest concern of many parents is that their children would receive a good education, make good grades, be involved in the right extracurricular activities, and excel in the right sports, all for the opportunity to get into the right college, get into the right career, and make the right kind of money to fulfill these dreams.
But what is all of that worth? What happens if disaster strikes? What happens at the end of our lives? What happens if all our efforts fail to stand, if everything we have becomes ash? Who will inherit our empires of dirt?
Our greatest aspiration in life should be that we would live to serve God. We were made by the Lord, for the Lord, to the glory of the Lord, and we should strive to live in such a way that brings Him glory (read Colossians 1:13-23 and Philippians 1).
If you are looking to be truly fulfilled in life, follow, obey, and serve Christ. Repent and believe the gospel, and live in full submission to Jesus Christ as your Lord. This is the purpose for which you were made! “The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.” – Ecclesiastes 12:13-14.
I preached on Colossians 3:1-8 HERE, and Colossians 3:9-17 HERE, if you’d like to watch two Biblical sermons on this text. May God bless you and enable you to live for the glory of Jesus Christ our King!
